What to Have Ready When You Call

  • Your city or ZIP code
  • Where the water heater is located (garage, attic, exterior closet)
  • What's happening, no hot water, a leak, unusual noise, age of the unit
  • Gas or electric, tank or tankless, if you know

If It's Actively Leaking, Do This First

A tank holds forty to eighty gallons, and an attic unit above finished ceilings can do a lot of damage in the time it takes anyone to drive out. Three steps, in this order, before you worry about anything else.

Close the cold water supply. The valve sits on the cold inlet at the top of the tank. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If it won't budge, shut off the main instead.
Cut the energy. Gas: turn the control knob to OFF. Electric: switch off the water heater breaker. Don't skip this, an element firing in a draining tank will burn out.
Then call. Tell us it's an active leak and we'll route it as emergency dispatch. More detail on what the leak location means is on the leaking water heater page.

If you smell gas, leave the building first and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't touch switches on your way out.
